A little bit of the Shire will be coming to Salt Lake City this September with the announcement of Elijah Wood as a guest at Salt Lake Comic Con’s annual fall convention.

Wood is an acclaimed actor, voice actor, producer and DJ best known for his role as the hobbit Frodo Baggins in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy films. The film series won 17 total academy awards and walked away from the global box office with nearly $3 billion.

This isn’t Wood’s first trip to Salt Lake City, though. The star set his sights on the city in 2014 for a visit to FantasyCon to act as DJ for the event’s kick-off party. This, however, will be the first time he comes to mingle with fans, including participating in a panel, photo ops and autograph signing opportunities.

“(Elijah Wood) has been somebody we wanted to have for a long time,” said Dan Farr, Salt Lake Comic Con’s founder and Show Producer. “He’s very rare, kind of, on the comic con appearance circuit. In fact, for the time that we’ve been doing these conventions we’re only aware of one other convention appearance that he’s done over the last four years or so.”

According to Farr, his appearance is a pretty big coup for the Salt Lake convention, and it’s directly related to the fans who have supported it.

“It really has to do with the great reputation of the con,” he said. “Managers and celebrities all talk well of the con and its fan support.”

The decision to pursue Wood as a guest was a pretty obvious one, Farr said.

“The ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy was an epic series and Elijah’s role as Frodo made him a fan favorite around the world and certainly for our Utah fans,” he said. “We’re thrilled that Elijah can join us in September. This is one of our strongest celebrity lineups yet and we know that our fans will be excited to meet the hero responsible for ensuring the destruction of the Sauron, the Dark Lord.”

Though “Lord of the Rings” is one of Wood’s most popular projects, the star also appeared in “Back to the Future Part II,” “Deep Impact,” “Sin City” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” He’s also known for his voice work in “Happy Feet,” “Happy Feet Two,” “Tron: Uprising” the animated series, and Tim Burton’s “9.” He also launched his own record label, Simian Records, in 2005.

Wood joins an already impressive guest lineup slated for the convention, including Dick Van Dyke, Val Kilmer, John Cusack, Jon Bernthal, Christopher Lloyd, Michael Rooker, Joan Cusack, Wil Weaton, Rob Schneider and more.

According to Farr, his personality is one that should resonate well with guests, and there are already a lot of fans expressing excitement over the announcement.

“It seems like the (guests) that are harder to get are the ones that create the most excitement when we finally do get them,” he said.

Being a fan of the fans, Farr said his own excitement toward guests usually grows as the fan enthusiasm grows, but if there was one guest he personally is looking forward to the most, it’s Dick Van Dyke.

“I’ve known him for going on 20 years,” he said. “He’s somebody I know better than most of the guests that we bring in and is somebody who I feel is so wonderful that, having fans meet him, I know that they’re not going to be disappointed. I feel like he’s going to be the Dick Van Dyke that they hope he’ll be. That’s been my experience with him.”

Salt Lake Comic Con is set for Sept. 21-23 at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City. For more details or to purchase tickets now, head to saltlakecomiccon.com. You can also read more about event updates and guest announcements at heraldextra.com/comiccon. [Source]
