This October, Max Landis and Robert C. Cooper will bring Douglas Adams’ beloved book series to the screen as Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency debuts on BBC America. We sat down with the cast and crew at San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, where they unveiled a new trailer and gave us some insights into the new show.

Landis, who wrote the new Power Rangers movie, arrived in San Diego sporting a rainbow-colored flop of hair atop his otherwised shaved head and a T-shirt to match. He says the decision to adapt Douglas Adams to the screen was an easy one. “Don’t you want to pick up Excalibur?” he asks. “Once King Arthur drops it, don’t you want to get that sword? I mean it’s Douglas Adams! He’s one of my principle—it’s like Douglas Adams, James Cameron, Preston Sturges, The Marx Brothers, Rod Serling and Richard Matheson are like my guys. You tell me I can do any of their stuff—except for the Marx Brothers, who I’d never try to do—I’m there [snaps] immediately.”

While the books were adapted once before in Great Britain, Landis has a very different idea for the show, and is not shy about that fact. “It hasn’t been done yet!” he insists. “The BBC Dirk Gently didn’t even have supernatural elements. I mean, that’s what Dirk Gently is! [slams table]. This isn’t Monk!”

Showrunner Robert C. Cooper, best known for the Stargate franchise, says the new show is a mixture of character drama and dark comedy with a healthy helping of bizarre, hard-to-classify elements. “You look at the television landscape, and there’s so much stuff out there now. As a writer/creator you kinda go, “How do I do something different?” Well, this is different. I mean, I know it sounds cliche to say to press on a day like this, but it really isn’t like anything on TV. And I think that those types of points of view are actually very rare. When you have an opportunity to kind of play in that sandbox, yeah, why wouldn’t you?”

Samuel Barnett plays the title character, a quirky private detective whose belief in the inter-connectedness of all things has him taking a very different approach to investigating. That leads him to rely on loner Todd (Elijah Wood), the reluctant Watson to his Sherlock (Todd even brushes off that comparison in the trailer).

“On the surface, it’s a show about a detective trying to solve the mystery of a millionaire’s murder. But I think what’s great about the show is there are so many tangential, seemingly unrelated characters and plot lines, and you’re watching it thinking, ‘What do all of these things have to do with one another?’ Indeed, it takes probably six or seven episodes for you to see how they all fit together. And I personally love that kind of thing, watching a show—like Game of Thrones—while you’re watching all these separate strands, all these characters in this are starring in their own TV show basically. They could all be their own leads.

“So, you find eventually that they do come together, and I think what’s going to be nice about the show is that there will be something in Episode 8 that if you’re a super fan of the show, you can go back and go, ‘Oh, that was planted in Episode 1.’ All the things that you think are random will make sense. On one level you can just enjoy it for a kind of murder mystery and let it wash over you… There’s another level where it’s full of Easter eggs and clues that you’ll be able to go through and chart. It’s probably more of a drama than a comedy, though it is very funny. It’s a very grounded, normal world in which really extraordinary things start happening.”

Elijah Wood says that the relationship between Dirk and Todd has some similarities to Ryan’s relationship to the titular dog in Wilfred. “I suppose that there’s a push and pull occurring. And in that regard, yes, and there’s a slight bit of antagonism. Obviously there’s a method to it. [Dirk] isn’t meaning to be antagonistic or to thrust me into things to make me uncomfortable, that’s the primary difference. He really wants a friend and he really wants help. And there’s something deep in him that knows that I need to be involved. And the intuition that knows Todd has some things to figure out.

“Ultimately, I don’t think Todd realizes it, but the journey that they’re on to solve this case will change his life forever, and hopefully in a good way, because Todd has a lot of things to sort through, as we realize throughout the course of the show.”
