While attending last summer’s San Diego Comic-Con the cast of DIRK GENTLY HOLISTIC DETECTIVE AGENCY was in attendance to preview Season 2 and the continuing wacky, outrageous adventures through the twisted timelines. Here is what was gleaned from the interview with stars Samuel Barnett and Elijah Wood:

We’re curious exactly where are your characters pickup up on this next season. Is there a time jump?

SAMUEL: It’s like two months later.

What is Todd’s mindset? Is he traumatized by the fact his sister is gone?

ELIJAH: Yeah, Todd is desperately searching for Dirk and desperately searching for his sister with a great deal of conviction and belief in what Dirk stands for. They’re sort of following the universe in that everything is connected and the universe will lead you to where you need to go. Todd was very slow to come on board with that, but he is absolutely fully convinced now.

SAMUEL: But Dirk’s having an existential crisis because Dirk’s finding he has friends. That’s the problem when you have friends is that you have people to care about. Once you have people to care about, they could get hurt and then you could feel sad. Also Dirk’s realizing that he’s kind of misconnecting the fact that his so-called kind of powers and belief in the universe when everyone around him keeps getting hurt because of it. So his thing is that this actually maybe just nonsense. So he’s going to do a complete 180 degree, more to where Todd began — which is, “I don’t want to do this and I think it’s nonsense. I need to really kind of have this crisis about that.”

Todd and Dirk had a really complex relationship throughout the first season. What can you guys tease about how that dynamic will evolve going into Season 2?

Dirk Gently is returning to BBC America later this fall.

Based on Douglas Adams’ novels, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency will premiere on BBC America on Saturday, October 14 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT.

While season one explored time travel, with some body-swapping thrown in for good measure, the second season will delve into fantasy, as, according to BBC America, “The vast dangers lurking in the fantasy realm navigate a path to Earth.” Dirk and the show’s crew will have to stop that threat before it can take hold, but to do that, they’ll have to find each other first.

The second season finds Dirk on the new case to “find The Boy,” while the show will continue to delve into how everything, from Blackwing to Bergsberg to the magical land of Wendimoor is all connected.

Season 2’s returning cast includes Barnett, Wood, Jade Eshete as Farah, Hannah Marks as Amanda, Mpho Koaho as Ken, Fiona Dourif as Bart), Dustin Milligan as Friedkin, Michael Eklund as Martin – Rowdy 3, Osric Chau as Vogel – Rowdy 3, Viv Leacock as Gripps – Rowdy 3, and Zak Santiago as Cross – Rowdy 3.

The new season, from showrunner Robert Cooper and creator Max Landis, will also see the introduction of John Hannah as The Mage, Amanda Walsh as Suzie Boreton, Tyler Labine as Sherlock Hobbs, Izzie Steele as Deputy Tina Tevetino, Aleks Paunovic as Wygar Oak, and Alan Tudyk as Mr. Priest. [Source]

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency returns to BBC America THIS FALL for a new case!

Posted on November 24th, 2016 by admin     0 Comments

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is staying open for business.

BBC America has renewed the series for a second season, it was announced Monday.

Based on the novels by Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams, the show is described as a “serialized comedic thriller” following the bizarre adventures of eccentric “holistic” detective Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett) and his reluctant assistant Todd (Elijah Wood), as they weave their way through one big, seemingly insane mystery a season, crossing unlikely paths with a bevy of wild and sometimes dangerous characters, each episode landing them a few random steps closer to uncovering the truth.

The 10-episode second season will bow in 2017. The season one finale airs Dec. 10 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

“Outlandishly different, Dirk Gently has hit a sweet spot with BBCA fans,” BBC America president Sarah Barnett said in a statement. “With Elijah Wood and Samuel Barnett’s chemistry as oddball detective/sidekick duo, and our creators promising ever greater genius-weird cosmic mystery in the next case, we’re happy to announce more of this truly original and entertaining show.”

Max Landis (American Ultra, Chronicle) penned the adaptation and executive produces with Robert Cooper (Stargate Atlantis), Arvind Ethan David, Zainir Aminullah, Ted Adams, David Ozer, David Alpert and Rick Jacobs. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is co-produced by AMC Studios, Ideate Media and IDW Entertainment, with Circle of Confusion producing for BBC America. [Source]

When Elijah Wood took on the role of the hobbit Frodo Baggins in the famed “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, he was plunged into the world of Middle-earth, where he had to contend with dragons, Orcs, Ents and a Gollum.

Wood’s new project, BBC America’s “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” finds him in the real world, but its weirdness could rival Middle-earth. He plays Todd Brotzman, an unlucky hotel bellhop suddenly thrust into a sci-fi flavored mystery populated by an assortment of bizarre characters, including Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett), an eccentric, fast-talking sleuth who believes in the “fundamental interconnectedness of all things” and sees Brotzman as the Watson to his Sherlock.

“Gently,” based on a popular novel by Douglas Adams, marks a return to series television for Wood, who spent four seasons starring in FX’s “Wilfred,” about a young man who has a unique friendship with his neighbor’s dog, played by Jason Gann in a furry dog costume.

In recent years, Wood has put much of his focus on offbeat fare. His extensive gallery of characters includes a technician who erases memories (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”), a concert pianist terrorized by a sniper (“Grand Piano”), a horrific murderer who scalps his victims (“Maniac”) and the voice of Mumble the dance-happy penguin in “Happy Feet.”

His other activities include heading up a production company specializing in genre fare (“The Greasy Strangler”) and DJ’ing as half of the duo Wooden Wisdom.

Wood sat down last week to talk about choosing roles on gut instinct, life after Frodo and his new series, which premiered Saturday.

Q: What attracted you to “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency?” Were you familiar with the novel?

This October, Max Landis and Robert C. Cooper will bring Douglas Adams’ beloved book series to the screen as Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency debuts on BBC America. We sat down with the cast and crew at San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, where they unveiled a new trailer and gave us some insights into the new show.

Landis, who wrote the new Power Rangers movie, arrived in San Diego sporting a rainbow-colored flop of hair atop his otherwised shaved head and a T-shirt to match. He says the decision to adapt Douglas Adams to the screen was an easy one. “Don’t you want to pick up Excalibur?” he asks. “Once King Arthur drops it, don’t you want to get that sword? I mean it’s Douglas Adams! He’s one of my principle—it’s like Douglas Adams, James Cameron, Preston Sturges, The Marx Brothers, Rod Serling and Richard Matheson are like my guys. You tell me I can do any of their stuff—except for the Marx Brothers, who I’d never try to do—I’m there [snaps] immediately.”

While the books were adapted once before in Great Britain, Landis has a very different idea for the show, and is not shy about that fact. “It hasn’t been done yet!” he insists. “The BBC Dirk Gently didn’t even have supernatural elements. I mean, that’s what Dirk Gently is! [slams table]. This isn’t Monk!”

Showrunner Robert C. Cooper, best known for the Stargate franchise, says the new show is a mixture of character drama and dark comedy with a healthy helping of bizarre, hard-to-classify elements. “You look at the television landscape, and there’s so much stuff out there now. As a writer/creator you kinda go, “How do I do something different?” Well, this is different. I mean, I know it sounds cliche to say to press on a day like this, but it really isn’t like anything on TV. And I think that those types of points of view are actually very rare. When you have an opportunity to kind of play in that sandbox, yeah, why wouldn’t you?”

BBC America debuted the first look at “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” Saturday (July 23) at San Diego Comic-Con — and it looks like a ton of fun.

Starring Samuel Barnett in the title role, the show thrusts loner Todd (Elijah Wood) into Gently’s investigation into the bizarre murder of a millionaire. The two cross paths with a cavalcade of wild and dangerous characters, each episode catapulting them around through seemingly random events that will eventually lead them to uncovering the truth.

“You’re a detective who doesn’t find clues. That sounds insane,” says Todd in the trailer, as he appears to have no idea what he’s gotten himself into.

“Everything is connected … The universe will make you a part of this whether you are complicit or not. You are now a vital part of the investigation,” says the eccentric investigator.

“I am not your Watson, asshole!” declares Todd. But it kind of looks like he is.

Co-starring Mpho Koaho, Fiona Dourif, Michael Eklund, Miguel Sandoval, Dustin Milligan, Aaron Douglas, Neil Brown Jr. and Richard Schiff, “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” premieres Oct. 22 on BBC America. [Source]
